The Woolacombe International Sandcastle competition is back after rain stopped play in 2007 and takes place on Woolacombe Beach 11am to 4pm on Sunday July 6th.
The competition features teams from local companies and teams from Italy, France and Spain and, on the day, the beach is packed with about 20 teams covering the shore in sandcastles. Some of the amazing sculptures include cars, mermaids and seals, some of which cover several square metres of sand. Children love it most - particularly when they get to smash all the sculptures at the end of the day!
Woolacombe is celebrating this year, as its beach retained “recommended” status as one of the UK’s cleanest beaches in the Marine Conservation Charity’s 2008 Good Beach Guide.
It's a big favourite for families and surfers, attracting thousands of people each summer to the beautiful arc of 3 miles of golden sand.
Families are also invited to take part; team entries (six per team) are invited, with an entry fee of £75 per team. Proceeds go to North Devon Hospice and children can come with buckets and spades to help build a special display.
